This song, This Is Our God, by Phil Wickham, was released a little less than 2 weeks ago. At first, I didn't find the song to be very catchy. In fact, it was rather plain the first time I heard it. As I kept it on repeat, I began to hear the different layers of instruments and effects of the song. As I broke the song down to its core, I began to see it as a work of art.
I didn't hear the need to track two separate electric guitar parts, but I needed chords as the foundation, so I tracked the base chords on keys instead. Whew, I was friggin' nervous when I recorded myself playing the Arturia Keystep 37. The keys are so small and it was easy to press the wrong note. I had to do so many retakes with the keys, and I'm already playing really really simple stuff.
Now, because I'm using only one electric guitar, I whacked a shimmer reverb throughout the entire song to give my sound some depth. As I wasn't quite sure if I wanna use the keys as something like a synth, I made the shimmer reverb my "synth". It worked out rather well! Alternated between a single Distortron and stacked OCD. The stacked sounds sounded superb!!!
Acoustic, needless to say, was needed because Phil Wickham is mainly an acoustic guitar player. Without the acoustic guitar, a Phil Wickham song wouldn't be complete. The acoustic guitar is rather apparent during the bridge, as with all other Phil Wickham song. Dang I really gotta stop mentioning the words Phil Wickham!
Last but not least, the bass guitar. As it seems, I've grown to love a full-sized bass guitar after my last rodeo with SIT's Freshmen Showcase gig. My short-scale bass guitar suddenly feels really really awkward. It suddenly becomes very tough to play punchy bass lines because there's not enough space for the right hand. Maybe I'm looking at a new bass guitar soon???
Overall, it was a fun 6 hours of recording on one of the coldest nights in Singapore's history. Like legit, the past week has been wet all week. The rain never stopped and temperatures dropped to 22 degrees on most nights. I haven't turned on a single fan in what seemed like forever! Really nice weather but my fingers are near freezing at the end of this 6 hours! Crazyyy!!!
