🔊 GAS Strikes Again - Part 2

Christmas indeed came early this year. Good news and bad news all converge into this post. Which one should I talk about first...

OK, I'll start with the bad news first so this post can end on a good note. If you have read the Part One of this post, you will know that I upgraded my HoF 1 to HoF 2 by ordering a Hall Of Fame 2 Reverb on eBay on 18th November 2017. But most don't know that on that very same day I ordered a Suhr Riot Reloaded as well.

This particular pedal has been on my wishlist for like ever, so I decided to get it alongside the HoF. However things wasn't as smooth as the HoF's delivery. 2 weeks into waiting and the Riot is still stuck at "Shipment Received, Package Acceptance Pending" by USPS. By the 3rd week I was already pressing the seller for a full refund.

Today they finally refunded me the full amount after a long tussle with them on eBay. Perhaps this is fate telling me that the Suhr Riot Reloaded is not meant for me. With the refunded money, I decided to put it to good use on another greatly desired piece of gear. And here comes the good news...

Yes, you are staring at my good news, my new amplifier, the Yamaha THR10C. Last week I rushed to Swee Lee to buy the Focusrite 2i4 because I couldn't resist the temptation anymore. Today I did the same with the Yamaha THR10C.

I went inside Yamaha today to try out a few guitars and basses before sitting down infront of the full THR range to test their sounds. I soundchecked for a good half an hour before deciding that the THR10C is still the best suited for my needs. Paid for it and left straight for home.

It costed me $368, but it was well worth it considering I've been wanting a decent amplifier for a really long time. Ever since my Ibanez amp died, the Line 6 Spider IV took over but people have been laughing at me for running my high-end Fender and boutique pedalboard into a crappy amp. I've been waiting ever since for "this one amp" to catch my eye.

And this THR10C seems to be it. The amp emulation on it is amazing. The tonal qualities is comparable to the amps it emulates. Really. Clear and crisp for the Blues Junior emulation, premium sounding for the Fender Deluxe Twin emulation. My most favourite emulation is the Matchless DC30 emulation, which is based off a Vox amp. The Bluesbreaker is my 2nd go-to setting.

For what it's worth, it is powered by a 15V standard pedal power adapter (or 8 AA batteries) which makes it super portable. There is also a USB output to record direct into the Cubase AI software provided inside the box. I can input my MP3 to play along with my favourite tracks and listen to my playing via headphones. With so many options, it's insanely worth the whole $368.

The best thing about this amplifier is, IT LOVES MY PEDALBOARD!!! Yes, the only thing I ask for in any amplifier is if it takes pedals well. And this THR10C loves pedals. All 5 emulations are clean amps so to get a overdriven sound I definitely need drive pedals infront. My Fulltone OCD sounds heavenly together with the THR10C, and that's all I ever will need!

Seriously this is probably my best purchase since the 2i4. Wait, that's just last week. :) Yeah this month's GAS is indeed hitting all the correct nerves. I don't mind spending so much in a few weeks if these upgrades are necessary.

Well, enough of pedals and amplifiers already I suppose. Now I'm researching about the possibility of mic-ing my amp during recording since the Shure SM57 path is so popular.

And that Thalia Capo looks quite interesting...

And the GAS never ends...

*As of 14th July 2020, the Yamaha THR10C is no longer with me. It has been sold for $230. It was great while it lasted.
